Full Job Description
The primary responsibility of the Engineering Manager/Chapter Lead is to lead and develop a team of software engineers. This includes building and enhancing the team's capabilities by providing the necessary skills, tools, and standardised approaches to ensure functional excellence. The focus is on driving value to the business through efficient, productive and stable delivery processes. As a subject matter expert in Software Engineering, the Engineering Manager will continuously improve how the Chapter manages and implements change. Additionally, the Engineering Manager is responsible for the line management of the Chapter's engineers, ensuring their professional growth and alignment with business goals. Accountabilities:
- Accountable for recruiting, developing, and retaining technical talent, including defining career development pathways for all engineers in the Chapter
- Accountable for setting compensation, benefits, and promotions for all Chapter members, ensuring alignment with organisational standards
- Ensures the implementation of effective performance management processes, supporting Squad Leads and Product Owners to enhance Squad performance
- Fosters an inclusive environment where engineers feel empowered to innovate, experiment, and learn from failure in a safe and supportive space
- Acts as the accountable owner and role model for promoting core values such as productivity, quality, transparency, and openness, embedding these into the Chapter's workflows and outcomes
- Ensures clear, open communication channels to promote knowledge sharing and collaboration within the Chapter
- Accountable for adherence to engineering, design, and testing standards that align with organisational IT governance and architectural policies, while ensuring compliance in a highly regulated environment, Responsible for managing all engineers within the Chapter, focusing on coaching, and mentoring in alignment with agile principles and Admiral's core values
- Oversees the recruitment, retention, and onboarding of technical resources for the Chapter, ensuring smooth integration into the team
- Supports the personal and technical development of all Squad-level engineers to enhance overall Squad performance
- Ensures effective career development for all engineers within the Chapter, fostering growth and progression
- Administers compensation, benefits, and promotion processes for Chapter members, ensuring fairness and consistency
- Supports Squads in achieving their goals by facilitating problem identification, root cause analysis, and informed decision-making
- Drives performance improvement within Squads by applying performance management controls, using feedback from Squad Leads and Product Owners, and implementing corrective actions where necessary
- Identifies and promotes the engineering skills required for the development of high-quality code, components, systems, and solutions
- Champions a culture where engineers embody core values such as productivity, quality, transparency, and openness in all their work, prioritising these over internal politics
- Acts as a senior coach and advisor to Agile Squads, staying engaged enough to provide value and direction while allowing teams the autonomy to solve problems independently
- Facilitates knowledge sharing between Squads and the broader organisation by establishing clear, concise communication channels, in collaboration with Squad Leads and Product Owners
Domain Expert - Extensive expertise in the field of Software Engineering - Strong knowledge and experience in Agile development practices, including the use of tools for testing, continuous integration, and continuous deployment
- Knowledge of cloud platforms such as GCP, AWS and Azure. Understanding their infrastructure, and leveraging their services to support scalable, resilient applications
- Experience in designing or implementing CI/CD pipelines to streamline code deployment, testing, and integration workflows. Practical experience with CI/CD tools such as Azure DevOps and processes is highly desirable
- Proficient in identifying and managing engineering, design, and testing standards that adhere to organisational IT governance and architectural policies, particularly within a highly regulated environment
- Experienced in utilising tools such as Jira, Confluence, and other collaboration and project management platforms
We do not have a set salary for this position, as it will be dependent on the successful candidate's experience.
