Full Job Description
SSEN Transmission are seeking a Senior System Planning and Investment Engineer to focus on power system planning and support integrate low-carbon generation into North Scotlands transmission network. In this role you will be responsible for ensuring the efficient, secure, and cost-effective operation of the power system through the application of optimisation, modelling, and advanced analytical methodologies. You will
- Develop, maintain, and apply transmission network optimisation models to assess performance, operability, and constraints, using industry-standard tools such as PSS®E or DIgSILENT PowerFactory.
- Optimise network topology, energisation sequencing, outage strategies, and constraint management, supported by scenario and sensitivity analyses to evaluate system risk, cost, and resilience under varying future conditions.
- Conduct robust and traceable system security and constraint studies, utilizing data analytics and automation to streamline workflows and develop digital tools that enhance modeling efficiency and decision quality.
- Drive continuous improvement in analytical methods and modelling approaches, working collaboratively with planning, outage planning, operations, and project teams.
- Engage with external stakeholders such as ESO/NESO, DNOs, Transmission Owners, and regulators to support coordinated optimisation activities and ensure alignment with relevant codes, standards, and frameworks (e.g., SQSS, STC, Network Planning Framework).
Experience in power system analysis, design and outage planning. - Working knowledge of electrical theory and experience in using power system analysis tools such as PSSE, Power Factory or similar.
- Good knowledge of the electricity industry, including interfaces with generator and demand customers, the regulator, the Electricity System Operator, other Transmission Owners and Distribution Network Operators.
- Ability to write clear and well-structured technical reports and network requirements and provide focused information for senior management.
- Degree (or equivalent experience) in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Mathematics, or a related discipline
