Full Job Description
Teacher (Primary Swimming Specialist - peripatetic) - fixed term until 30/06/2027
City Wide
Salary: £35,022 - £52,740
Hours: 35 per week
We are seeking an enthusiastic and committed specialist to join our Primary Curricular Swimming Team for the 2026/27 academic session. This is a full-time fixed-term position, and applications are welcomed from both Physical Education Teachers and Primary Teachers who hold a recognised swimming teaching or coaching qualification.
Ideally, applicants will possess an accredited rescue qualification, such as the National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches (NRASTC). However, support can be provided to gain this qualification while in post if required.
This exciting role involves delivering high-quality swimming lessons as part of an experienced and supportive team. You will work collaboratively with colleagues on some days and teach independently on others. The primary focus is the delivery of curricular swimming to P5 pupils across the city's primary schools, with opportunities to deliver preparatory lessons to P4 pupils where timetabling permits.
As a peripatetic teacher, you will work across a variety of schools and swimming pools throughout the week and academic year. Flexibility, strong organisational skills, and a commitment to providing excellent learning experiences are essential.
Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong commitment to health and safety and be confident working with children of varying abilities and levels of confidence in the water. Lessons are delivered in line with City of Edinburgh Council swimming certificate stages and the Scottish Swimming Framework, with pupil progress monitored and recorded using Pupil Tracker.
If you would like to discuss the role further, please contact the Wider Achievement Manager for Sport & Physical Activity via email on mel.coutts@edinburgh.gov.uk
This post is regulated work with children and/or protected adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. The preferred candidate will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check. Where an individual has spent a continuous period of 3 months or more out with the UK in the last 5 years, an Overseas Criminal Record Check will be required. You will be required to provide this check. An unconditional offer of employment and commencement in the post will be subject to the outcome of both these pre-employment checks being deemed satisfactory.
Salaries will be in accordance with the Scheme of Salaries and Conditions of Service for Teaching Staff in School Education.
We are committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce where everyone feels valued and able to be their best. We particularly encourage applications from women for senior roles, as well as people from minority ethnic backgrounds, people with disabilities or neurodivergent people, care experienced people, carers and LGBT+ people across all levels of the organisation, all of whom are currently underrepresented. All applicants will be considered fairly based on skills and experience. Disabled and care-experienced applicants who meet the minimum job criteria will be guaranteed an interview.
