Full Job Description

Trainee Debt Recovery Paralegal

Location:  Glasgow (hybrid)

Hours:  Full Time (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm)

BTO is seeking a Trainee Debt Recovery Paralegal to join our busy Commercial Dispute Resolution team in Glasgow. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with experience in Scottish debt recovery practice to develop their skills within a supportive and professional legal environment.

The successful candidate will support our Debt Recovery Paralegals to provide a full debt recovery service to BTO’s clients, including companies and individuals, across a broad range of commercial and consumer debt recovery matters. You will assist with a varied and high-volume caseload, working closely with departmental Partners, solicitors, clients, courts, Sheriff Officers and third parties.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Processing debt recovery files from initial solicitor’s letters through to issuing claim forms and corresponding with clients and debtors.
  • Raising court actions, including heritable actions for registered Social Landlords, and ensuring instructions are lodged within required timescales.
  • Preparing Notices of Potential Liability for Costs and Notices of Proceedings in heritable actions.
  • Providing clients with timely and accurate telephone and written updates on their cases.
  • Liaising with cashiers, fee earners, local agents, solicitors and other internal and external contacts.
  • Preparing court instructions and supporting the progression of matters through the litigation and enforcement process.
  • Assisting with billing, diary management and general administrative duties.

We are looking for someone who is organised, detail-focused and confident managing a busy workload to strict deadlines. You should have strong communication skills, a practical approach to problem-solving and the ability to build effective working relationships with clients, colleagues and third parties.

Ideally, you will have experience of Scottish debt recovery practice, processes and procedures as well as diligence remedies and options. An understanding of court litigation and enforcement processes would be advantageous, together with experience in communicating with clients, defenders and third parties.

Candidates must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong organisational skills, the ability to prioritise their workload, and excellent attention to detail.

You will join a supportive team where in-house training will be provided for the duties required. This role offers the opportunity to develop your debt recovery experience within a varied and client-focused legal environment.

BTO offers a friendly and positive working environment with a competitive salary and benefits package, including ‘BTO Rewards’ flexible benefits scheme.

To apply, please submit your CV together with a covering letter detailing your salary expectation.
