When rules are a law unto themselves

There’s a bit of a rule breaker in all of us. Yes, even Granny Ina’s been known to queue jump at the Tuesday lunch club.

Production_2_smallBut rules and regulations in the workplace are a different matter. In the production and manufacturing sector they’re key to productivity and keeping employees safe.

But there’s so many to keep track of!

We’ve golden rules, house rules and the ones that can be bent. And don’t forget the rule of thumb, unspoken rules and unwritten ones. Then there are the simply barmy ones, which it turns out Glasgow is particularly good at.

In fact, according to new statistics, Glasgow is home to some of the most ridiculous workplace rules in the UK.

These include having a strict time frame to go the toilet and banning employees from straying no more than 20 metres from the building at lunchtime – in case they’re late back from the chip shop.

Glasgow may have some daft diktats but none is as absurd as these corkers.

Stand up please

When French politician Ségolène Royal was appointed ecology and energy minister in 2014 she drew up a strict code of conduct for her staff. She demanded employees stand when she passed by, even having an usher to announce her arrivals and departures so people knew to get to their feet on time. Alors!

Comfort breaks

A Norwegian call centre cracked down on long bathroom breaks by tracking how long employees were away from their desks. After a few minutes a flashing light went off. Imagine being an assembly line operative and having to sprint back to position with hardly enough time to digest the sports pages of the Daily Dagbladet.

Brave the shave

The Japanese city of Isesaki banned its municipal workers from sporting facial hair. They were told all beards, ‘taches, soul patches or trendy stubble were a no-no after complaints from the public who said they found facial hair unpleasant. Has no-one ever heard of the incredible work ethic of the bearded Seven Dwarves? If you’re a production operator you should be allowed to whistle while you work – yes, even through your whiskers!
