The Spark team is dedicated to helping teams at the BBC think differently about what they do, how they do it, and change it for the better using our lean and change transformation toolkit. We are the BBC continuous improvement specialists and part of the BBC Transformation Office. Imagine working for an internal consultancy supporting departments to deliver even better value for the licence fee and meet new audience and digital challenges.

We have worked on projects spanning every BBC division and we have coached leaders to make improvements in their operational areas. Working with us is about improving value and reducing waste. We support productivity and processes, effective use of time, and how staff think and feel about their work. We have a toolkit and method designed to support lasting positive change using simple, supportive and inclusive solutions, We are looking for a Business Improvement Manager to join our team. In this role you will use lean and change expertise to help departments focus on the most impactful activities, and in the most effective way. Work is varied, you might be working with an editorial team to increase digital impact, supporting a Division with how they can re-focus activities, improving business processes, coaching and mentoring others or delivering workshops.,

  • Use your lean and improvement expertise to assist leaders across the BBC to assess and redesign internal operations to enable the BBC to maximise value for money.

  • Use data driven analysis to diagnose opportunities and offer appropriate recommendations, use presentation and visual management to communicate complex challenges and opportunities.

  • Review existing processes and workflows for efficiency and effectiveness and partner with stakeholders to deliver improvements

  • Act as a change agent and support teams through all elements of an improvement initiative including diagnosis of potential opportunities, design of new ways of working, planning implementation and benefits management.

  • Build enthusiasm and facilitate the adoption of lean and continuous improvement capabilities across the organisation

  • Design and lead workshops with teams across the BBC in areas such as problem solving, translating objectives into operational metrics and process improvement.

  • On own initiative structures, analyses and synthesises findings with minimum coaching.

  • Responsible for own projects and/or work streams within a project and for clarifying the requirements.

    You will be have a background in Lean and Continuous Improvement and be an excellent problem solver, able to offer the right balance of creativity and pragmatism, with the confidence and resilience to challenge assumptions.


  • If you work in Production, journalism or change management, have excellent stakeholder engagement and are passionate about improving day to day working you are likely to have some transferrable skills.

    What are we looking for:
  • A passion for Continuous Improvement with expertise in the use of lean techniques to drive efficiency, effectiveness and experience.

  • Change Management expertise, an understanding of how to deliver change well

  • A great collaborator, and able to work in partnership with stakeholders to pragmatically and creatively tackle problems and deliver outcomes for the business.

  • Excellent attention to detail, and able to use data to get to the root of an issue and identify opportunities.

  • An understanding of organisational dynamics, business processes and how we work in production and journalism

  • Above all, passionate about delivering success for the BBC.

    Location: This role can be based in any of the main hubs - London, Salford, Cardiff, Glasgow role with some flexibility - i.e. hybrid working

  • Travel: some travel may be required, including at least one visit per month to London to meet with the full team
    Salary: £45,000 to £55,000pa (plus London Weighting £5,164 if London based), depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
