Why work for us?

Patients are at the centre of everything we do in our daily working lives at NHS Borders ensuring they are safe, cared for efficiently, effectively by suitably experienced and qualified staff driving quality at the heart of patient care. We are a dynamic and forward-thinking team with a wealth of clinical and leadership experience.  We aim for an open and honest culture and believe in nurturing future stars in NHS.

Are you an experienced or newly qualified EM consultant looking for the perfect work life balance. This post in the picturesque Borders offers both. Leave the city stress behind and come and work in a place where the ethos is based small well-functioning teams that are integrated   together to achieve the best outcome for the patients with minimal bureaucracy. In a hospital of this size every voice is heard and valued. Despite being small its rural location ensures that the day to day patient load is both challenging and rewarding.

Not only is this a good job for work life the Borders is also a fantastic place to live for people who love the outdoors and is a wonderful place for young children.

The BGH is situated 30 miles south of Edinburgh in a very picturesque location with access to world famous mountain biking, lovely coast line and hill walking to cater to all levels of fitness and interest.  It has Train access to Scotlands capital and could be considered as a commuter post, though I would suggest living locally to enjoy all the benefits supplied by the local area.

The hospital sees over 32,000 patients a year.  It has 330 inpatient beds with access to General medicine , cardiology , respiratory, neurology , gastroenterology, Obs and Gyn, orthopaedics  Paediatrics, General surgery and urology, ENT, ophthalmology and Dermatology.  We are a Trauma Unit feeding into the Major Trauma Centre located in ERI.

Successful candidates will be contracted for 40 hours per week; however, part time will also be considered for the right candidate and consists of Direct Clinical Care as well as SPA time. The current working pattern includes day, evening, and weekend shifts, and while there is no on call commitment as the team grows the aim is to include on call work. The department is staffed with an enthusiastic and progressive team. We have a clear passion to support our recruits to develop their skills in areas which will benefit their future careers, you will have a significant role in inspiring and educating our junior medical, nursing and advanced practitioner tiers.
