Full Job Description

This post is based in the English & Exams Strategic Business Unit (SBU) within Global Assessments. Global Assessments oversees and manages the development, marketing, selling and delivery of British Council assessment products and services across a range of government, educational and corporate sectors and is backed by an assessment research group and advisory board. Aptis is the British Council's English language testing product and is an established global test of English language proficiency increasingly accepted as a high quality, cost-effective means of testing large-scale populations for a variety of purposes. Increasingly Global Assessments is selling and delivering customised tests and consultancy services building on its assessment research and expertise.

The Content Production Manager is responsible for the production of British Council assessment items, tasks, and tests with the objective of improving item quality and cost effectiveness in all aspects of the test production process. This role also manages the recruitment, training, standardisation and budget for Item Writers and Item Editors., Leadership/management

  • Plans and prioritises own work activities, and those of a wider Item Writer and Item Editor team to ensure sufficient supply of content for Aptis assessment products.

  • Leads on the review, revision, and editing of assessment items to ensure adherence to test specifications and support the creation of high-quality tests.

  • Support in the development and lead in the delivery of training activities for Item Writers and Item Editors.


  • Test development expertise
  • Provides advice and support to colleagues to ensure locally developed test products, projects and programmes are high quality, cost-effective and based on a genuine understanding of the key priorities and best practice within test development.

  • Actively builds professional networks and information channels that maintain an excellent understanding of relevant developments, stakeholders, and opinion formers in test development (in both the UK and internationally), to support the creation of high-quality tests.


  • Relationship & stakeholder management
  • Maintains positive working relationships with British Council assessment partners to ensure successful delivery of products and programmes.

  • Shares intelligence and ideas to support Test Production Managers in identifying and developing ways in which test development could make the most effective impact on the British Council's cultural relations and commercial strategies.

  • Supports in the development and presentation of proposals for tests to ensure these are soundly based and gain approval.

  • Supports in creation of supporting material and resources.


  • Commercial & resource management
  • Using agreed corporate systems and processes, adhere to budget to process monthly invoices, confirm completion of contracted work, and manage financial aspects of production.

    Demonstrable experience of writing test items for a test institution or exams board

  • Demonstrable experience of successfully managing a team to deliver a product or service to defined criteria

  • Demonstrable experience of successful project delivery to time, quality, and budget

  • Demonstrable experience of developing and/or delivering a staff training programme to deliver specific outcomes
