What you will do:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Enhanced Recovery Nurse to join the Surgical Services Team to facilitate the implementation of Nationally agreed protocols for patients requiring an emergency laparoscopic, laparotomy surgery and for patients requiring colorectal surgery.

Your primary role will be within the General Surgical and Surgical Receiving wards and theatres within University Hospital Crosshouse. The purpose of this role is to assist with the Emergency Laparoscopic and Laparotomy Scottish Audit (ELLSA) and National Enhanced Recovery Colorectal Initiative (NERCI).

You will work within the directorate of surgery and is employed by NHS Ayrshire and Arran- making them accountable for clinical decision making undertaken and for clinical assessment and treatment of patients following the Enhanced Recovery pathways. You will also have a responsibility to undertake both Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement via data collection and dissemination to the wider organisational team.

Knowledge, training and/or experience required to do the job:

  • Registered Nurse with current NMC UK registration
  • Degree in relevant nursing specialty
  • Supplemented by knowledge of surgical nursing with post graduate diploma level or equivalent.
  • Range of post registration experience, demonstrating required skills and experience for the post.
  • Excellent clinical decision making skills
  • Evidence of participation in service developments and quality improvement
  • Working knowledge of Acute Services policies and procedures and governance arrangements
  • Knowledge and understanding of local, regional and national surgical care and ELLSA and NERCI strategies

From 1 April 2024, the working week for NHS Agenda for Change workers in Scotland will be reduced.  Full-time hours will reduce from 37.5 to 37 hours (pro rata for part-time staff) without loss of earnings.

NHS Ayrshire and Arran will implement this change but it may not be possible to fully transition from 1 April and there may therefore be some areas of the organisation where implementation may take longer.  If the department is currently unable to safely accommodate the reduced hours from 1st April, you may be required to work 37.5 hours per week (pro rata for part-time staff)  until the department can meet the requirements without impacting patient safety - you will, of course, be remunerated accordingly. NHS Ayrshire and Arran is committed to full implementation of the 37 hour working week across all areas as soon as it is safe to do so
