Full Job Description

Thales UK provide a support service to a range of RN systems. The Field Services Engineer will provide dedicated support for the Optronics Mast Visual System and Sonar Systems at the dockside on submarine platforms based at Faslane Naval base and at the Glasgow site. The post holder will assist in coordinating the on-site support to all locally based platforms, also providing limited support at other locations, including overseas.

The post holder will be required to work with a degree of autonomy, reacting to problems as they arise. The post holder will be required to liaise with other dockyard field service engineers, dockyard authorities, dockyard contractors, and sub-contractors, assisting in the co-coordination of Thales responsibilities within the area of control. The post holder will assist in the identification and rectification of technical problems and issues, with support from the Glasgow Engineering team, with the aim of minimising any platform impact.

The post requires a well-rounded Support Technician with an awareness and working knowledge of relevant disciplines (software, mechanical, optical & manufacturing).

The selected candidate will be expected to absorb a significant amount of information, provided via a combination of bespoke and on the job training, over an extended period of time, to increase expertise in the detailed operation of these complex systems. The candidate will therefore need to be highly motivated and committed to this long-term role.,

  • Meet vessels on arrival for early, accurate debriefing of ship's staff.

  • Assist ships' staff to investigate, report, and resolve defects, keeping the stakeholders informed of all situations that may give rise to the need for corrective action.

  • Assist in ensuring a timely and appropriate response to Customer enquiries

  • Strive to reduce the number and duration of open OPDEFs for Visual Equipment.

  • Assist the Dockyard Manager in maintaining logs of work carried out in the dockyard, documenting problems and their resolution for future reference and reporting to stakeholders.

  • Review in store maintenance plans, logs and equipment requirements, sparing inventory and perform in-store maintenance activities as required.

  • Monitor upkeep and calibration of any locally stored equipment to ensure availability when required.

  • Assist in maintenance of platform Build Standard Records.

  • Advise on any areas of handbooks / documentation / training that are deemed non-optimal or deficient for investigation or action.

  • Advise customer on upcoming scheduled maintenance / liaise with RN on maintenance windows in the operational schedule.

  • Conduct reviews of onboard equipment, spares, general equipment condition, onboard preventive maintenance records and suggest improvements where appropriate.

  • Compile risk assessments for planned work.

  • The Glasgow site tasks will be predominantly supporting the Industry and Engineering teams in a diverse range of activities; product development, IVVQ, product rollout, internal / external training etc.

  • Be willing to learn different systems onboard HM Submarines and Warships based within HMNB Clyde (Sonar/Electronic Warfare/Communications) and other dockyards as required.

  • Be willing to learn and support the new autonomous MMCM system once integrated within HMNB Clyde.

    Essential

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Experience of investigating issues in complex systems.

  • Ability to work under pressure, as part of the larger support and engineering teams.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Experience in the use of standard test equipment (oscilloscopes, pressure gauges, etc.).

  • Ability to support activities.

  • Willingness to be flexible around working hours in order to respond to issues in a timely manner.


  • Desirable
  • Knowledge of Installation, Testing and Commissioning of large electrical / electronic systems.

  • Understanding / knowledge of IVVQ processes

  • Understanding / knowledge of health and safety aspects of working on or around heavy machinery.

  • Needs to hold or be able to achieve SC Clearance

  • Full UK Driving License.
