Full Job Description

We are seeking a Lead Photographer to provide maternity cover on a 12-month temporary contract. You will play a central role in delivering specialist digital photography services to support the Museums' Exhibitions and displays programme, publications, and image requests and to support research programmes across our curatorial disciplines.

Predominately studio based and object/product photography orientated you will be collaborating closely with colleagues from across the organisation, applying your skills and knowledge of digital photography systems, techniques, and processes to a varied and demanding photography programme. Based at the Museums' Collection Centre you may have the opportunity to work on location at our other Museums and on occasion at other venues.

You will be joining the Collections Data and Digitisation team as we move to a new Digital Asset Management System with a possible opportunity to help shape its future use. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to change and business performance, helping National Museums Scotland to fulfil its strategic objectives.

As a Lead Photographer at National Museums Scotland, you will:

  • Assist with the development and delivery of specialist digital photography services across a range of areas including exhibitions, publications, and research projects to meet operational and strategic needs.

  • Be responsible for organising and prioritising allocated work in accordance with agreed procedures.

  • Ensure the care and appropriate handling of museum objects, complying with National Museums Scotland's policies and procedures.

  • Support the care and maintenance of equipment and resources, including studio and location cameras, lighting equipment, computers, scanners, and other items as appropriate.

  • Develop specialist knowledge, keeping up to date with evolving technologies and techniques.

    We are looking for enthusiastic, passionate, honest, service-driven individuals to join our Collections Data and Digitisation team., Proven relevant professional photography and digital imaging experience

  • Highly proficient in Adobe CC and Capture One (or similar image capture software), Premiere Pro; scanners and related software; and hardware, including PC platforms

  • Desirable experience in photogrammetry, Reflective Transformation Imaging (RTI), Timelapse capture and Focus stacking software

  • Ability to problem solve and come up with creative solutions

  • Relevant experience of working with museum/heritage collections

  • Ability to work unsupervised, while ensuring that line manager is kept up to date on progress and significant developments

  • Excellent organisational and project management skills with the ability to prioritise and manage multiple projects

  • Excellent communication, influencing and presentation skills with ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels and to explain complex concepts to people with a range of expertise

  • ICT skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
