Full Job Description

Job Description Summary

GE's Power Conversion business, part of GE Vernova, provides electrification systems that are critical to customers' power and energy needs for their high-performance applications. We work with some of the world's major energy, maritime and industrial organizations, helping to enable a transition to energy efficiency and decarbonization, including through our specialist motors, drives and control technologies.

Job Description

Due to a significant increase in orders, we are seeking a talented Mechanical Design Team Leader to be based in our engineering office in Glasgow. You will be responsible for managing a team of mechanical design engineers developing our next generation of electrical drives and switchgear, as well as optimising our existing product portfolio to ensure it continues to meet our customers' needs. This is a hands-on role, so as well as acting as line manager to the engineering team, leading and mentoring them to develop a culture of continuous improvement, you will also be expected to provide technical leadership. You will also be actively involved in delivering projects, with involvement at all stages of the product development process from concept to manufacturing, collaborating with Project Managers, Technical Leads, and other Technical Managers.

In this role you will focus on:

  • Functional leadership of the engineering team, providing feedback and insights to ensure alignment to business goals and drive continuous improvement of systems, products and processes.

  • Collaboration with the product and project managers to set priorities, managing base cost, and effectively allocating resources per program and project requirements.

  • Maintaining an appropriate operating rhythm; driving simplification, efficiency, productivity, and overall team performance.

  • Supporting the implementation of engineering tools and processes to optimise engineering throughput and quality; ensuring that DFMA techniques are implemented in the design process.

  • Acting as a technical point of contact for all mechanical engineering topics related to our drive and switchgear products.

  • Developing innovative designs to meet all requirements for performance, reliability, cost and manufacturability for components and electromechanical assemblies with challenging requirements.

  • Creating 3D CAD models and 2D drawings in PTC Creo.

  • Creating and managing parts and BoMs in Siemens Teamcenter PLM system.

  • We are looking for a committed and professional individual with:
  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent domain, or significant relevant experience in a mechanical design engineering environment.

  • Significant relevant engineering experience with good technical knowledge of manufacturing processes, sheetmetal design, DFMA, material science and equipment assembly techniques.

  • A strong track record in product development, ideally gained in the electrical equipment or power electronics sectors.

  • The ability to interpret electrical schematics and use them to develop suitable mechanical designs.

  • Demonstrable experience in a people leader or team leader role.

  • Good proficiency in the use of PTC Creo, or similar 3D CAD software for the creation of 3D part and assembly models and 2D drawings.

  • Good engineering, communication, and organisational skills.

  • Sole UK nationality and possession (or eligibility to obtain) UK security clearance to SC level.

  • What will make you stand out:
  • Experience in the design of LV and MV switchboards would be advantageous.

  • Experience of packaging of power electronics equipment.

  • Expertise in FEA and CFD, ideally using ANSYS Mechanical and Fluent.

  • Experience in the use of Siemens TeamCenter PLM software for BoM creation & management.

  • Experience of working with a de-centralised engineering team across international manufacturing sites.

  • Valid passport, a will and flexibility to travel internationally (short trips approx. a few times per year).

  • You can expect from us:
  • Challenging and exciting projects.

  • A work environment where everyone feels that they belong, that their contribution matters and where they are able to perform to their full potential, no matter their background, identity or circumstances.

  • We understand that not everyone has the same expectations about their jobs, careers and work-life balance, thus we are happy to discuss flexibility requirements.

  • Attractive compensation.

  • Flexible benefits so you can build a package that fits your personal needs. Some core benefits are: Employer pension contribution (not subject to individual contribution), Income protection, Private Health Insurance and Life Assurance.

  • 26 days vacation + bank holidays.
