Full Job Description

UKHSA’s Operational Services Department is seeking two dynamic Team Leaders to spearhead our specialist radiation protection services. These pivotal roles offer the chance to provide expert consultancy and training to a diverse clientele, including educational institutions, energy giants, emergency services, defence organisations and nuclear operators.

Role Overview: As the new team leader, you will inherit a thriving commercial portfolio and be responsible for steering projects from the initial inquiry to final reporting. Your day-to-day will involve coordinating with our skilled radiation protection professionals and our dedicated administrative team to ensure seamless contract management and billing processes., The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) offers hybrid working – this means that whilst the role will be based in one of our three offices, there will be opportunities for an element of working from home.
Role only available at certain locations

The balance between home and workplace working is to be agreed with the line manager, determined primarily by business needs and in line with departmental policy.

  • Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas. Relocation expenses are not available., The job holder will be required to carry out most of the following responsibilities, activities and duties:

  • + Working with others to develop RCE occupational/ professional level training services and support the delivery of that training.
    + The provision of commercial radiation protection services to a wide range of clients, advising on and assisting with regulatory compliance and implementation of effective safety management programmes for work with ionising and non-ionising radiations. This is achieved through visits to client premises, situation analysis/risk assessment and the preparation of persuasive and authoritative reports.
    + Responding to enquiries on a wide range of radiation protection issues from the public, industry and local and national agencies.
    + Responding to radiation events and incidents on behalf of commercial clients.
    + Support and contribute to UKHSA’s emergency response role for radiological incidents and, when required, non-radiological events.
    + Training and supervising new and less experienced staff in RPA/RWA/NIR and other related activities.
    + Team leader with line management responsibilities.
    + Contribution to the development and delivery of radiation protection training services.
    + Supporting UKHSA activities relating to the development of standards, legislation etc with respect to operational radiation protection issues.

    As part of the process, candidates will be invited to interview which will involve an in-depth discussion of your previous experience and professional competence in relation to the criteria set out in the Person Specification. Candidates will also be asked to participate in a session where they will be required to prepare and deliver a 10-minute presentation to the panel on ‘how their appointment will enhance the service delivery of the department’. This will be followed by a question-and-answer segment as well as a written assessment. The presentation will be designed to assess each candidate’s experience in line with the requirements of the role. Full details will be provided prior to the interview.

    Security clearance level requirement
    Successful candidates must pass a disclosure and barring security check. Successful candidates must meet the security requirements before they can be appointed.     Essential
    + Full clean UK driving licence
    + A higher scientific degree, eg MSc or PhD in a relevant subject, or, equivalent experience plus substantive experience in operational radiation protection
    + Ability to assess complex situations and interpret detailed documents that may include legislation
    + Ability to assess novel situations and applications by applying fundamental scientific principles to understand and identify potential hazards
    + Ability to observe and question to gather information and sift it to disregard the irrelevant and identify key issues
    + Ability to critically analyse working practices and propose and implement changes
    + Demonstrate capability to act upon incomplete information using experience to make inferences and decision making
    Desirable
    + Membership of professional body, eg Society for Radiological Protection
    + Certificated radiation protection adviser
    + Certificated radioactive waste adviser
    + Proven experience in operational radiation protection with evidence of particular expertise in one or more areas of interest
