Job Description

Requirements

Working towards an undergraduate degree within higher education (in either third or fourth year of study at the University of Dundee OR Abertay University) in a relevant discipline.

Responsibilities

With the Scottish Government’s 2045 Net Zero target, the importance of decarbonising the heating grid has become even more important. Dundee is positioned internationally as a leader in transitioning towards Net Zero, and more can be done to ensure Dundee is to meet national targets. Shallow Geothermal Energy is a greener energy solution that can provide heating to public and private properties. This energy utilises heat stored in soils and is typically considered to be systems designed to capture heat from the first 200m of soil and rock below the ground surface. The heat comes from two sources – solar radiation and heat from the Earth’s core. Shallow Geothermal Energy has several benefits, most notably, the heat available is not dependent on geographical location and can be harnessed independent of weather or climatic conditions. During the six week placement, you will be situated within the Dundee City Council Sustainability & Climate Change Team with additional support by academics from Abertay University who specialise in Geothermal Energy, to assess shallow geothermal energy potential in Dundee

The Individual

You will have experience of working within a team, experience of information management, IT skills including experience of Microsoft office packages, and knowledge of sustainable development issues, particularly climate change and the energy transition. The ability to communicate effectively, both written and oral, and the ability to research and write clear and concise reports, including recommendations is essential.
