Trainee Specialist Community Public Health Nurse/School Nurse, Band 6 / annex 21 Para 2 (iii)

NHS Tayside is offering an excellent opportunity for motivated Nurses to join the School Nursing Service, across Tayside, Angus, Dundee and Perth & Kinross. The post holder will be accountable for a delegated caseload, working as an integral part of the team, You will work in partnership with children, young people, families, carers and multi agency colleagues to asses, identify and address need, in a supportive approach, to the School Age population, based on the principles of Getting It Right For Every Child (GIRFEC) National practice Model.

Candidates require knowledge and skills pertaining to child protection policy, procedure and systems and will be expected to provide accessible, safe, effective, person centred care.

Excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills, along with knowledge of IT systems is essential.

Candidates will be expected to caseload manage therefore must be adaptable and flexible, and able to take the lead in responding to the needs of people of varying age and stage, in a variety of circumstances, including situations where prioritising and addressing of presenting need will be required.

Caseload management requires candidates to demonstrate and have the ability to apply critical thinking skills to ensure assessment and care planning is addressed in a timely manner while understanding the importance of achieving quality outcomes, utilising innovative ways of working and resources to empower children, young people and families/carers in a manner that is supportive and objective.

Applicants must be a UK NMC Registered Nurse, with a current registration, having previously obtained a Degree Level Nursing Qualification.

Expectation of the role is that the successful candidate will progress, as a Trainee School Nurse, and complete the Post Grad., Advanced Nursing Practice Education (School Nursing) programme with our Education Partners at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, with a commitment to engage with this distance learning approach supported by NHS Tayside.

Continuation in this training role will be subject to compliance with attendance required and prescribed by Robert Gordon University, along with successful completion of key stages throughout the course.  Failure to achieve required outcome will result in your continued employment being managed in accordance with NHS Tayside Skills Register - Redeployment Protocol

As a trainee pay is determined as a percentage of the pay for qualified staff, in accordance with Annex 21 Paragraph 2 (iii) of the Agenda for Change Terms and Conditions.

For periods of training lasting for between one and four years, pay will be adjusted as follows:

  • More than three years from completion of training; 60% of the pay band maximum for the qualified rate;
  • More than two but less than three years prior to completion of training; 65% of the pay maximum for the qualified rate;
  • More than one but less than two years prior to completion of training; 70% of the pay band maximum of the qualified rate;
  • Up to twelve months prior to completion of training; 75% of the pay band maximum of the fully qualified rate

Successful candidates will commence the Postgraduate Diploma in Advancing Practice at the earliest opportunity.

NHS Scotland is reducing their full time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay.  This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff.  This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours.  However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Recruiting Board.
