Let’s meet Nurse Lesley Robertson, who works in the Crosshouse Hospital offices of NHS 24, and find out how she does precisely this.

Tell us about your job

I’m a Nurse Practitioner at NHS 24, delivering national out-of-hours primary care. You definitely need good communication skills to be able to do this job, both written and verbal. The main part of the role is dealing with calls in a triage system, assessing symptoms and referring patients to the most appropriate healthcare professional.

When and why did you choose NHS 24?

I joined in August 2016. I’ve worked in hospitals most of my career – in Haematology Oncology, A&E, Cath Lab, Interventional Theatre and Coronary – but wanted to find out how I could use my nursing skills in a different setting.

Is there a typical day?

No two days are the same and that’s what makes this job really interesting. I take calls from people all over Scotland with all sorts of clinical questions and problems. I give reassurance as well as clinical advice and direct them to the most appropriate healthcare. I also work night shifts and that really suits my lifestyle due to childcare demands.

How do you cope with the responsibility?

All my colleagues are very supportive and on hand to give me help and advice. If you need guidance or even a hug, someone is always around to help.

What on-the-job training do you get?

The six-week training at NHS 24 is first-class. It’s a steep learning curve but very satisfying. You start with learning about the system and listening to others, before intensive training sessions. You also listen to your own calls, which is a reflective process – it makes you better at caring for the people who call.

What do you enjoy most?

Without a doubt, the best part of the job is talking to patients, helping with their concerns and making their patient journey as efficient and effective as possible. It’s definitely all about feeling you have made a huge difference to someone’s life!
