Growing demand for tradespeople

The latest official figures show new orders for housing in Scotland continue to grow in order to meet demand.

According to the statistics, newbuilds increased by almost 13% to almost 20,000 last year.

Scottish Government figures have also revealed more than 70,000 affordable homes have been built across the country over the past 10 years.

Hiring new construction workers will be vital to ensure this important growth continues in 2018 – so it’s no surprise there is a growing demand for tradespeople.

Right now housebuilders and developers are keen to fill vacancies for electricians, plumbers, bricklayers, plasterers and all other trades essential to raising the walls and putting roofs over heads, including bathroom fitters and suspended ceiling fixers.

Stonemasons, labourers, steel fixers, painters and decorators are all targets for employers, too, as well as concrete pump operators and finishers.

In fact, according to Homes for Scotland, every new house built supports at least four jobs and every nine houses supports one new apprenticeship.

However the industry body, which represents most of the major house builders, also says more needs to be done to meet the needs of the sector.

If this sounds like an opportunity that’s right up your street, there are many ways to get into the industry and companies welcome everyone from beginners to the experienced to later-in-life career changers.

No matter what your background might be, if you can show you’re hard working, can handle deadlines, work in a team and communicate well, you’re already half way there.

Add some technical skills – perhaps computer-aided design or experience in engineering as a technician – and you can begin climbing the career ladder.

If a previous role is in manufacturing or production, for example, potential employers should know about your skills in handling machinery, adhering to health and safety guidelines and being able to manage resources and targets.

Of course beyond the actual building work itself, there will also be a need for property professionals such as surveyors, and estate agents who can look after marketing, buying and selling.
