Independence day for retailers

Everyone likes to be considered just a little bit different. We don’t mean Lady Gaga dressed in a bin liner with a pineapple on her head different.

Small_Circles_CirCles20180314_Retail_2Just a wee bit unique in the way we are, from the words we choose to the clothes we wear.

Life would be exceedingly boring, after all, if we were all the same.

This perhaps explains why we’re seeing such a huge rise in the number of independent retailers.

Not for them are the shelves stacked with the same old stuff: no, they offer fresh, individual, out-there goods and they’re proud to do it.

Similarly, they look for sales assistants and shop managers who can bring upbeat personalities to the workplace and become a vibrant part of the sales experience for customers.

The opportunities for such employees are growing.

A new study by OnBuy.com has found, with the demise of some retail giants, there has been a rapid increase in the number of independent stores popping up.

Scotland alone had 114 independent retailer openings in 2017.

Additionally, the study found a range of barbers, beauty salons, cafes and tearooms all filling the gap left by the superstores.

If you’d like to join this new wave of independence, here are our top five tips to help you land that retail role on s1jobs.

Feel the quality

Boutiques and niche stores don’t have the advantage of the chain shops in bulk buying and selling. This means they rely on the quality of goods and customer experience to be the reason customers come back and pledge their loyalty. Show you can share your inside-out knowledge of the products and you’ll become a valuable member of the team.

Let’s hear all about it

Are you a social media guru among your pals? Cool. Online marketing has created lots of opportunities for smaller retailers to promote their businesses. You may not have a marketing and PR degree (yet!) but being able to spread the word for your new employer adds a bunch of gold stars to your CV.

Personality pays

As we witness this new surge in the popularity of independent retailers, consumers crave a shopping experience that offers the kind of character and personal service they feel has been missing from bigger companies. What would you rather hear: “Unexpected item in bagging area” or “Welcome back, Shona, how did that outfit work for you at your cousin’s wedding?”

Now go liberate your personality with a role in independent Retail form s1jobs.
