Learn how to control your body language

Granny Ina never believed in the science of body language. “That’s why we have mouths, silly billy!”

Then she saw s1jobs’ very own Davey on TV showing off the art of twerking . . . and a new awareness of the power of bodies to speak to us suddenly dawned.

She’s never really been quite the same since.

The truth is, our bodies involuntarily reveal an awful lot, especially at a job interview.

From the moment we walk through the door, rightly or wrongly, we’re being sized up.

So, if you’re hoping to land one of the top Oil & Gas roles on s1jobs, what can you do to make sure you’re giving out all the right signals?

It’s easy with our four-step plan.

Pleased to meet you

Have you seen the video of Canada’s Justin Trudeau managing to contain Donald Trump’s infamous grab-and-yank handshake? Make this required viewing to perfect your own handshake when you meet your interviewer.

Never be overpowered or overpowering: be firm but don’t squeeze or linger. And never ever be tempted to fist pump!

Sit up straight and don’t fidget

Slouching or sitting cross-legged suggests you’re here for a coffee and a catch-up. Playing nervously with your watchstrap makes you look like you’re late for another, much hotter date.

You’re actually here to secure a role as Project Manager on a new oil field so sit up straight and let your calm posture relay one message: I’m here to do business and I’m serious about getting this job.

Look into my eyes

From first dates to first interviews, holding eye contact is incredibly important, although eyelash fluttering is not recommended in the latter. Glancing at your scuffed shoes (oh, how did you miss that!?) or staring wide-eyed at the picture of your interviewer’s hideous family, just makes you look bored or terrified.

Smile like you mean it

Smiling will automatically make you feel instantly more relaxed. It also allows your interviewer to see you can be happy and composed, even in what’s usually considered to be a stressful situation – a great skill to have when working on an oil rig offshore.

Do, however, practise the art of smiling. You want to look naturally at ease, not grinning at your own secret joke.

Now put this into practice by applying for roles in Oil & Gas with s1jobs.
