executive2_3They think it’s all over. Well, if you’re Julen Lopetegui, it is now.

In a shock move just two days before the World Cup kicked off, Spain sacked their head coach following the revelation he had been appointed the new manager of Real Madrid.

Much to the consternation of the Spanish football association (FDEF), Lopetegui had already negotiated his new role at Madrid, which will see him take over the reins from Zinedine Zidane, without prior consultation.

While a sacking of this magnitude is not uncommon in the sporting world, we have no doubt it’s a massive HR headache for all involved.

But, for executives and senior managers, hiring, firing and everything in between is all par for the course in business.

We take a look at some other high-profile cases of dismissal that have caused ripples.

Angus Deayton

The actor was unceremoniously dumped from presenting duties on Have I Got News for You in 2002, following allegations regarding his personal life.

It was decided his position as the presenter of the long-running political satire show had become untenable.

HR managers know all too well the importance of integrity and continuity in business – hence the decision by the BBC to sever ties so quickly.

Kate Moss

Another day, another celebrity scandal. This time supermodel Kate Moss was the recipient of several swift dismissals following a very public scandal in 2005 that saw her dumped by H&M, Dior and Chanel.

As the ‘face’ of these brands, Miss Moss had found her ambassadorial duties compromised.

Executives are always keen to ensure employees adhere to their brand ethics and so Kate’s multiple dismissals at the time were as unsurprising as they were inevitable.

Thankfully, her career has since recovered in spectacular fashion.

Piers Morgan

Journalist Piers Morgan was famously escorted off the premises of the Daily Mirror, where he had held the editor’s position for almost nine years, after the now notorious fake Iraqi torture photo scandal toppled him.

When an incident of such magnitude threatens the entire business, HR – and most likely PR – professionals have to work deftly to ensure the fallout is contained.

Hiring, firing, contract negotiation, terms of employment, company growth . . . management is a vast, challenging yet ultimately rewarding sector for the right candidates.
