Spotlight on Lanarkshire

Never been to Lanarkshire? You’re missing out! Not only is this the geographical heart of Scotland’s Central Belt, it’s the energetic hub of an extended business community, with activity in every sector, from tourism and leisure to renewables and finance.

Prod_ManufIt’s a small region that packs a big punch!

Its proximity to Glasgow and Edinburgh and links to main motorways and rail routes also make it a top location for manufacturing, production and logistics companies.

New City Deal funding will also now focus on the Ravenscraig Infrastructure Access project as part of the wider Pan Lanarkshire Orbital Corridor. This will see new and upgraded roads from the M74 at Motherwell to the M8 at Eurocentral and onward past Airdrie on a new link road to the A73 south of Cumbernauld.

This means commuters, too, can take advantage of the employment opportunities the area has to offer.

Meanwhile, a multi-million pound boost has been given to plans to redevelop the former Ravenscraig steelworks site in North Lanarkshire with the aim of attracting new businesses, bringing 6500 jobs and generating £360 million for the local economy.

Much of the massive site, which is bigger than Monaco, has already been developed but the site owners now want to create thousands of new homes and five primary schools.

This reflects the fact Lanarkshire is prospering and recognised for the diversity of its economy and its workforce – it’s estimated there are more than 1.5 million working age adults within an hour’s drive of the region, all offering a range of skills.

All of this is why s1jobs have chosen the Lanarkshire town of Bellshill as the location for our next job fair.

Lanarkshire’s Job Fair, in association with North Lanarkshire Council, will take place on Tuesday, October 8, from 10am until 3pm, at Bellshill Cultural Centre in John Street.

National and local companies will be along on the day with exhibitors including North Lanarkshire Council, First Direct, B-Spokes, Timberpak, Lidl, Eden Springs, Brightwork, Connect Appointment, Yodel, Escape Recruitment, Macphie of Glenbervie, Scotbeef, Albert Bartlett and CMS Windows.

The event is free to attend and no pre-registration is required.

Of course, Lanarkshire has always been home to forward-thinking pioneers, from explorer David Livingstone to political force Keir Hardie. Hard work and enterprise empowered innovation and built prosperity.

Historically, it benefited from a thriving coal industry but these days it’s better known as a hub for the production, manufacturing and logistics sectors.

It’s not surprising, then, that it continues to attract world-leading businesses and is a major contributor to the economy.

It’s not all work and no play, however. With thriving new towns and historic villages, Lanarkshire offers residents vibrant urban and peacefully rural environments.

Home to two UNESCO World Heritage sites – New Lanark and the Antonine Wall –it also boasts world-class sports centres such as Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility.

In terms of production and manufacturing, Lanarkshire has lots to offer.

In the food and beverage sector, as well as being the birthplace of globally-renowned Tunnocks tea-cakes, the region is also home to Lees, Border Biscuits, the Bells Food Group, Lightbody (part of the Finsbury food family), Errington Cheese, Wiseman Dairies and numerous breweries and distilleries.

This really is the breadbasket of Scotland!

Job seekers can expect to find roles on s1jobs as front-line production operatives, food safety managers, quality assurance supervisors, technical experts, cask handlers, forklift drivers and warehouse administrators.

World Heritage Site New Lanark was originally founded on the cotton industry, and textile production mills abounded in the area. These days the textiles industry is mostly gone but Lanarkshire instead produces myriad materials, such as chemicals, plastics and electronics to be used in many different industries.

The manufacture of materials affords a wealth of employment opportunities in the region, including development chemist, planning manager, materials technician and laboratory technician.

If Lanarkshire sounds like your kind of working environment, why not head along to the s1jobs fair in Bellshill?
