How to stand out in a crowd

When it comes to caring for others, Scotland aims to invest in the best.

How to stand out in a crowd

A report from the Scottish Government shows we had record health funding last year of over £13 billion.

Education, too, had a healthy prognosis, with £120 million going directly to schools through Pupil Equity Funding.

The Parliament Information Centre, meanwhile, revealed health and social care now accounts for 16 per cent of all of Scotland’s jobs.

If you’re keen to join a jobs sector that helps others – such as education, social services or medicine – you need to know there’s a line of applicants jostling to get in there before you.

Differentiating yourself from other job seekers in a highly competitive market can be challenging.

Unlike the queues for the hottest pantos at Christmas time – sharp elbows will not be enough to get you to the front.

Oh, no they won’t!

What you need are standout qualities to make a winning impression on your new employer.

This begins by ensuring your CV and covering letter or email go to the top of the pile. To do this, make them sparkle. Don’t be tempted to generalise: highlight the talents you have that are perfect for each particular role.

Let your personality shine through too. For example, a brief case study of how you’ve helped others not only reflects experience but is an opportunity to show how your personal characteristics will help you do your job.

Doing some research before your interview means you can also show off your knowledge of the school, hospital or health board and any specialist area that interests you.

At your interview stand out from the crowd by asking bold questions, such as: “What makes people want to work here?”

Be mindful working in education or healthcare can be fun and rewarding but the interview process can be demanding.

So don’t get rattled by unexpected questions. Remember your personality is being assessed as much as your abilities – if you want to be remembered for the right reasons, stay calm and stay focussed.

But never stay too serious. A smile can work wonders so relax and show your friendly nature – after all, caring for others is often about being there to help lighten the day.
