Stay safe out there!

Passwords. We use them every day to unlock phones, access computers or log into the apps and sites that help our lives run smoothly.

admin 2That’s why it’s so important to have a robust password system that can’t be easily breached. You know the drill: a combination of upper and lower case letters, numbers and something fairly lengthy.

Admin pros, of course, know the importance of security for their computers and laptops. But what else can you do to ensure personal and work devices are as secure as Alcatraz?

Never store your login details

Most of us have dozens of different passwords and, while it can be tempting to store login details so we don’t forget them, this is a big no-no.

It’s also vital to get into the habit of logging out of websites, apps and even our own personal computers.

Admin staff often work with sensitive company information, so having good security habits is a key part of the job.

Vary your passwords

It may seem best to use the same password for every website, device or app, but this makes it easier for breaches to happen.

Assign a unique password for each login. That way, if a device is hacked or stolen, the perpetrator is limited in the information they can access.

There are a variety of password manager apps that can help you remember your login details, too, so even if you have a poor memory you won’t be stuck.

It’s also good practice to change your passwords frequently. Those working in admin are often required by employers to do this at regular intervals.

Back up your data

Regardless of what kind of device you’re using, back up your data regularly to ensure information is stored as securely as possible. External hard drives and cloud storage are both good options.

Admins need to be on this because the responsibility falls on you to ensure important company data is protected as best as possible.

Also, if a device fails or security is breached, copies are always available.

Be mindful about net connections

Avoid public wi-fi connections, only open trusted websites, update your software regularly and only download apps from authentic sites.

Malware can easily infiltrate devices and compromise data. Consider installing a VPN (Virtual Pirate Network) to boost security and ensure your antivirus software is up-to-date.
