How to stay strong in festival season

How much do you love summer? Enough to hand in your notice and head for a season serving cocktails in a beachside bar?

Small_Sales_1Steady there, champ! If you work in sales there are ways to enjoy the summer without throwing away your career.

Some of the companies advertising their vacancies on s1jobs gear up for July and August by sending teams out on the road to forums, festivals and country fairs.

Just think about that for a minute: you could go to some of the hottest gigs in the country, hear headline acts and soak up the festival atmosphere without having to pay for a ticket.

It sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? Well it’s not.

But before you go all gig giddy just remember the sales teams are there to work too. They have targets to meet. Staying in work mode while everyone around you is having fun is tougher than it sounds, so here’s our guide to making it through festival season.

Stamina

You’ll be putting in a long day talking to thousands of people who are there to hear the music, not talk sales tariffs. Expect to be hoarse by day three.

Comfy Shoes

Don’t let ill-fitting shoes put you off your pitch. Get your footwear right and you are halfway there. Wellies with foam insoles?

Preparation

It’s worth packing suncream, shorts and waterproofs too. Prepare for all kinds of weather because that’s what you’ll probably get.

Sandwiches

Festival catering divides into two categories: the good and expensive and the woeful and expensive. Don’t be out of pocket or risk salmonella. Pack yourself a healthy lunch and you won’t be tempted by that dodgy hog roast.

Patience

The queues in and out of festival sites are a notorious blackspot for tailbacks and breakdowns. If it’s hot, you’ll stew in the company van. If it’s wet, you could find your sales caravan bogged down in the mud. Either way the only answer is to keep your cool until things get sorted out.

Focus

You aren’t here for the music or the atmosphere – though you do get to enjoy both – your main job is to sign up customers. Forget this and your festival stint could dent your reputation. Stay focused on the job, in hand and you could put yourself centre stage and in the spotlight.
