But did you know that in motoring insurance, as well as picking up the pieces, new policies are actually saving lives?

The secret is telematics, the technology that uses little ‘black box’ recorders fitted to cars, most often driven by young drivers.

These are used to feed back a continuous stream of information on how the car is being driven.

Stick to speed limits, drive only during daylight hours and brake in good time and the policy price drops.

Heavy acceleration, driving for long stretches without a break and a cavalier attitude to warning signs will add up to a bigger bill.

Last year the number of telematic policies exceeded three quarters of a million for the very first time and the figures show not only are they making policies more affordable for young drivers, but they’ve had a dramatic impact on the number of accidents.

Research by the British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA) has shown the accident rate for young drivers, one in five of whom will have a bump in their first six months on the road, falls to one in sixteen in cars with telematics.

Graeme Trudgill, Executive Director at BIBA, says: “It is encouraging to see such a big take-up of telematics policies. Motor insurance premiums for young drivers are higher than for other drivers because statistically they have more accidents, but the safety advantages of telematics help to reduce users’ premiums.”

These types of policies can offer savings of up to 25% for careful drivers. Over time, the data provided by the ‘black-box’ builds a personalised risk profile based on an individual’s actual driving.

This ongoing monitoring of driving behaviours encourages better, safer road use and research from insurance provider ingenie shows that telematics-based feedback can halve a driver’s risk of crashing over their first policy year.

In fact, young drivers end up being three times safer behind the wheel in cars fitted with a black box.

If you’re looking to make a positive difference to customers in the insurance industry, it’s these kinds of policies that are going to do you proud.

Not only are they helping you to make life easier among the under-25s by saving them money, in some cases they will actually be helping to save lives.
