Health and Safety Manager

Band 7 £46,244 - £53,789 per annum

Plus Distant Islands Allowance of £1,279 (pro rata)

Are you an experienced health and safety professional looking for an opportunity to make a positive impact for patients and staff? Do you want to work with a team who care for people every day in a constantly changing environment? Are you able to work in partnership with colleagues in promoting a health and safety culture? If so, NHS Western Isles has a rare opportunity to lead a Health & Safety Team in the Western Isles.

You will be a key advisor to management and staff, primarily responsible for monitoring, maintaining and continually reviewing NHS Western Isles Health & Safety systems by championing a safety culture throughout the organisation. This will include guidance in specific hazard areas of Health, Safety and Fire risk, for example, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health, Asbestos Management, confined spaces, working at height, lifting equipment, managing contractors, violence and aggression, ligature risks and falls.

Key duties will be:

Line managing the Health and Safety trainers in providing, support, advice, facilitating education and training to clinical teams and other services on all aspects of patient, staff, contractors and visitor safety
Developing, maintaining and enhancing a pro-active and positive health and safety culture which effectively contributes to the NHS WI Healthcare Governance roles, responsibilities and plans.
Developing and gaining approval for the implementation (and thereafter monitoring and reviewing) of Health and Fire Safety policies, standards, procedures, strategies and guidelines
Compliance with all statutory requirements in relation to safe working practices and safe operations of plant, equipment and services
The provision of Fire Risk Assessments for all NHS WI premises.
Ensuring that reports and results are recorded centrally and locally and ensure the development and maintenance of the Fire Risk Assessments.
Managing the delivery of flexible statutory Health and Safety and Fire Training.
Reporting to the Health & Safety Committee and Staff Governance Committee.

NHS Scotland is reducing their full time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay. This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff.
